Sending texts from your computer is extremely useful in dozens of situations. Perhaps you lost your phone and need to send a message to someone, maybe you’re over your monthly text limit and still need to get in touch with your friends, or you may just hate typing on a tiny keyboard. Whatever the case may be, it’s easier than you might think to learn how to send a text message from a computer.
There are hundreds of online services out there that’ll get the job done, but none of them are quite as simple and reliable as the methods outlined below.
How to send texts via iMessage (iOS and MacOS)
Though iMessage formerly only handled iMessages, later iterations of Apple’s operating system include an option specifically designed for forwarding SMS messages directly to your Mac or another iOS device. Once properly set up, you’ll be able to quickly send messages from your computer to any known number using the Messages app on your machine — and receive them in a similar fashion without ever glancing at your phone.
Step 1: To set up iMessage and SMS forwarding on your iOS device, navigate to the main Settings menu and tap Messages.
Step 2: Toggle on iMessage and ensure you’re logged into the same iCloud account as all other devices using Messages. Also, make sure all of your devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Step 3: Tap Text Message Forwarding, toggle the switch directly right of the Apple device to which you want to send SMS messages, and then enter the six-digit confirmation code displayed on the device. Doing so will confirm that you want to send and receive messages from your iPhone on your Mac, and confirm you own the machine.
Once everything is set up, you can send text messages by clicking the pencil icon located above the contact list, entering your desired recipients, and composing the message as you would normally. However, keep in mind that the standard text message limit of 160 characters still applies even when using Messages. A text longer than 160 characters will likely count as two for billing purposes, or more depending on how long it is.
However, you can send messages to other iOS and MacOS users for free, as long as they use Messages. Remember, a normal text message will be in a green bubble, while an iMessage will be in a blue bubble. This method works with both Mac and iOS.
How to send texts via Android Messages (Android)
Android Messages lets Android smartphone owners text straight from a web interface, no matter what device they’re using. It works on desktops, laptops, or even iOS devices. You do have to set Android Messages as the default app on your phone though, so make sure to do so before getting started.
Step 1: Go to the Android Messages homepage.
Step 2: Open the Android Messages application on your phone.
Step 3: Tap on the three-dot menu icon and select Messages for Web.
Step 4: Tap Scan QR code and use your handset to scan the QR code from the Android Messages homepage. If you aren’t sure how, here’s a guide on using QR codes with today’s smartphones. This will link your device and your browser, and you’ll see messages and contacts appear on your other device as they synchronize.
Step 5: Use the web interface to chat with friends and family as you would on your Android smartphone.
If you want to retain the synchronization between devices so that you don’t have to scan the QR code every time, you can hit the Remember this computer toggle in your web browser.
How to send texts via Cortana (Windows)
If you use an Android phone (or an old Windows Phone) and Windows 10 on your computer, you can easily send a text using Cortana. If you happen to have a Windows phone, just start typing the word text in Windows 10 search bar, followed by the person you’d like to contact. Assuming your computer and your phone are both signed into the same Microsoft account, Cortana will figure out who you want to text and ask you what you’d like to say.
Windows 10 devotees using Cortana on their Android device can also send and receive texts in a similar manner and the latest versions even let her read them for you.
Step 1: To send a text using Cortana on the desktop, make sure the recipient is listed within the People app. If your chosen recipient is not listed, launch the app and click the addition sign to add said recipient to the Microsoft Account database.
Step 2: Make sure the linked Cortana app on your Android device is set to push and receive text messages to and from your PC. Start by heading into Settings, then Sync notifications, and make sure Apps notifications sync is switched on.

Step 3: Tap Choose which apps to sync and select your device’s messaging app.
Note: You can actually enable any messaging app to send and receive messages, including Facebook Messenger, allowing you to quickly respond to a message from any PC running Windows 10.
Once both platforms are configured, you can send a text message to a Microsoft Account contact by simply saying or typing the word Message in Cortana’s text field in the Windows 10 taskbar. Cortana will then expand and provide fields for choosing your desired recipient, typing your message, and choosing the SMS option.
Users can actually expand on that command with Message [insert name] or Text [insert name], which will allow you to automatically select a recipient. You can even take things further, if you want to include additional context. For instance, you can say Message [insert name] Did you already leave for work?
As for receiving texts, the Android iteration of Cortana will forward texts to a Windows 10 PC, which will then appear as pop-up notifications in the right-hand corner of your screen. Users can reply to the message from directly within the notification, assuming only one message was received. If multiple texts arrive at the same time from the same sender, then the notification will not provide a text field for your response.
Like the Windows Phone version of Cortana, there’s no way to browse older texts in Windows 10. It’s a great way to reply to a single incoming text, however, and to send a single outgoing text without having to pick up your Android device. Unfortunately, the feature is not really meant for full conversations. This method works best if you have updated to the most recent Windows 10 edition, and will not work at all if you’ve been avoiding updates since the Anniversary edition.
Sending texts via email
As our last option, you can send an SMS to a mobile phone without the need of a third-party service — you can do so directly within your email client by emailing the right carrier. Don’t know what mobile carrier your friend uses? Find out here.

And one of those is cloud sync that allows you to read or reply to SMS messages from your Mac’s native Messaging app.
If you’re already using the Messaging app but are unable to view the conversations from a Mac, you’ll have to enable iCloud Sync on your phone. To do that, go into Settings > [Your name] > iCloud and there, turn on Messages.
Sadly, Windows users have no option for this if they own an iPhone. To use it, all you need to do is head over to the Google Voice website on your PC, sign in with your account, and you’re all set.
Unlike other solutions on the list, Google Voice’s web app doesn’t require a constant phone connection, since all your conversations are stored on Google’s servers. But unfortunately, it’s limited to the United States for now.
3. Android Messages (Android)
Google’s default SMS app for phones running stock Android, Android Messages, has a web client as well. It features a Material Design theme and a familiar two-column layout.
In addition, you can enable dark mode from the settings. There’s an option for receiving notifications from your browser too. You can even commence both private and group conversations from the web app itself.
To get started, open the Android Messages website. Once there, fire up the Messages app on your phone and under the three-dot menu, tap Messages for web. Follow the steps and you should be online in a few seconds.
In case you’d like to install Android Messages and you don’t have a compatible phone, try sideloading the latest APK file.

On your computer, there are multiple ways you can view your messages. You can download the desktop apps or browser extensions, or sign in at the Pushbullet website. Note that you’re limited to 100 messages per month unless you pay for Pushbullet’s expensive Pro plan.

I only have a Galaxy 4 Tablet - no Android phone. Can I still use MightyText? If so, how?
Thanks,
DanI use AirMore to send and receive text messages from computer (both Windows and Mac). Nice!
hii
mighty text sucked! downloaded the app, all it did was say 'success' and couldnt do anything else with it. contacted the developer, never heard from them.
Hey..whats up??
That means it's good to go. You don't have to do anything else with it on your phone. Follow the instructions, man. Just go to the website it gives you to finish setting it up. Works great!
Try MooMle. It's free and it works great!
It's available on the Play Sotre
I used Mighty Text. Worked without problem.
i use yahoo messenger just to send message
This could be a good alternative to avoid Distracted Driving. We at Endeavour developed a solution for a ISV which wanted to avoid users from sending / receiving text messages while driving. When I think back this text solution can avoid distraction since the messages can be auto-responded by setting triggers.
Title is misleading, it should say for Android phones.. then you would lose a lot of traffic I suppose..
Turn your phone into a hotspot and you can control your phone without internet connection or network infrastructure: directly from phone to PC: Android WebControl
Viber has desktop application for ALL platforms. It works through your internet connection. Why do I need any of these. To top it all the much touted Mighty Text, if it works through cellular network inly, is useless in my opinion if it can't do it over wifi and internet. I don't need any application to text somebody over over 2G or 3G connection. The idea is also to save money !!!!
I use Gmail (using Google voice) - send and receive email, SMS, IM, audio calls, video calls - all in one place - from my phones and anybody's computer - to individuals or groups - free. What am I missing? Why should I change?
Haha. Don't think you are missing a thing (as long as you live in USA). The rest of us are looking for viable solutions.. and there seems to be an abundance of viable contenders.
I dont own an android device and not in the USA but about 13 to 14 hours im on Computer! any other way? :/
I'd suggest that you check out TextNow for browser based texting as well as Mac, PC, and Android apps. There is also one in the Google Chrome webstore. Dedicated phone number, voicemail, unlimited texting.. and free! What's not to like? :-)
Get any smart phone with Viber compatibility. Then you can use it on both, including voice and video!
Kies Air came with my android phone. It allows the user to send and receive SMS on one's computer. It also allows the user to access your phone's photographs and videos.
Wammu on Linux http://wammu.eu/
I often use Skype to send SMSs, seems to work OK
MySMS will work across IPad, Android and PC and is a cinch to set up!
Pinger is a computer app that I think deservers some attention..and your cell phone doesn't require a wifi to communicate!!
myphoneExplorer if you have a sony android. some difficulty in installing. but works nicely. really fast
+1 for MyPhoneExplorer
Works on pretty much any andoid (not ust Sony) - I'm using at present on a (Samsung) Note 9 and a LG v20.
Works great with 3rd party SMS apps on phone also: I'm using Textra on the Note.
Additional notes:
-very little battery impact: maybe drains +5-6% over a working day
-can be secured with a password on connection (optional)
-can enable autostart on phone (so doesn't have to run continuously) (optional)
-can share bi-directional clipboard between phone and pc
-portable version available
-Phone and PC must be on same networkI have no financial or other interest in MPE outside of being a satisfied user for the last 4 years.
Not sure about other countries. But in Canada the major carriers such as Bell , Rogers & Telus has free SMS message off their webpages.
I should have pointed out that the apps mentioned work outside USA, include text and phone services (including voicemail), and have Android and PC/Mac versions to keep all your devices sync'd., and all are 'free'.. you can earn or purchase credits.
For iOS, check out the TextNow, TextMe, TextPlus, and SendHub apps.
Thanks for this post. I was getting ready to whine 'what about those of us who have iPhones and iPads?' :) I now see I have some choices.
My Apple iMessage works quite well, computer OR phone. Please don't become too biased, there are many of us who are Mac users that love the way the iOS shares many applications.

mysms works better in my experience than mighty plus it archives all your texts to Evernote which creates a permanent record
Yes, mysms is just awesome! Works also for iOS users.
Great article, but: you forgot to mention that: if 1) you are IOS user and 2) you are not in USA there is no option at all!!!
I like the first two choices -- just wish there was something like it for iPhone. I've used google voice for a long time, but with the lack of development, and lack of integration on the iphone, I've had to give it up.
I don't download anything even though I frequently send SMS. Just use my email program to send to someone's cell phone: #########@vtext.com or @vzpix.com for pictures. If they're not on Verizon, change the domain accordingly.
I do the same, and it works very well for me.
I'm surprised DeskSMS isn't listed. It's a great app which also allows you to check your phone's messages. The only thing you need is a Google account and then you can receive your messages through Google Talk or the Google Chrome add-on.
I use Google Voice, the text from computer is nice but I use google voice as my main number and love that you can mark a phone number as spam and never hear my phone ring when they call again.
Instead of sending 50+ texts, I'd rather call my friend or have him call me! I could get a lot more said in less time by voice than by texting, and it would be a lot cheaper - and stave off Repetitive Motion Syndrome at least for a while longer! ;o]
RMS attacked when hit the Post button?
=)I agree talk is a lot easier than send a lot texts. And if you need send so many texts, just get your friend on any of the message apps.
If I'm going to be sending 50+ text messages, I'd tell my friend to call me or I'd call him! One or even a few text messages are enough. But if you're going to send that many texts at a half-minute a text, you can get a lot more said in less time using voice and it would probably be cheaper, not to mention putting off Repetitive Motion Syndrome (RMS) at least for a little while. ;o]
Another solution for iPhone on the Mac is Phone Amego which connects via Bluetooth and can display received SMS using Notification Center or its own HUD. Sending SMS uses Google Voice or Skype which allows you to specify a 'Reply to Number'. Enjoy!

you don't need to be on the same wifi network anymore in airdroid
Zipwhip works well, and for simply sending..
10-digit cellphone number (just the number, no dashes) followed by:
AT&T, @txt.att.net.
Verizon, is @vtext.com.
T-Mobile, it is @tmomail.net.
Alltel, the number is @message.alltel.com.
Sprint it is @messaging.sprintpcs.com.
While it is free to send messages this way, standard text message rates apply to recipients because the messages are delivered as ordinary texts.I also used Mighty Text, until I found ZipWhip. Much easier to use and it has its own download for your computer, so that you will be notified with a popup and you can write messages without opening your browser. When needed, you also have access to all your messages, by opening a browser to view them. When you use your browser, it works the same as Mighty Text. Go a ahead and try it. I think you'll like it
Visio 2013 professional download microsoft. I use the SMS in Yahoo Messenger.
Do you think that setup would work over here in Manila, Philippines where I am?

I liked Motorola invention of its webtop lapdoc. The phone I have made by Motorola turns into a mini laptop and desktop computer. Technically my Motorola phone has two operating systems on it. One partition runs Android, while on the other partition runs a lite version of Linux for the Webtop. Too bad Motorola killed the webtop. Also I own another smartphone which is my BlackBerry and I have a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The PlayBook was originally made for as an extension for BlackBerry with the use of BlackBerry Bridge. I can Bridge my BlackBerry phone to my BlackBerry tablet and send text messages with my tablet. Noting is stored on the tablet as both devices are connected using a secured encrypted blue tooth connection. All data a streamed encrypted from the BlackBerry phone to the tablet.
Motorola didn't really 'kill' webtop, just the new version runs as the tablet version of Android.
Not as cool, but it's still fun to brag to those who don't have Moto ;)
I quite like 3CX Android Remote. The app runs a server off your phone like the others listed, and it tells you your device IP address and a port number.
You can access this server through any web browser, no extra software needed. It can be configured with a username and password for extra security. The app let's you check your messages, use the web browser, has a file browser, and with root access you can remote control your phone (I couldn't, but the feature is present) as well as access the camera remotely.
The interface looks like a standard desktop, and I have found it very easy to use.
I use the Mighty Text. I love it. I do not have to keep my phone in the same room with me anymore. I like when it tells me I need to charge my phone too.
Agreed. And it ID's the incoming number, too.
I'm a big MightyText fan too. Although when I'm on VPN for work, my employer blocks access. The browser widget gives repeated error messages.
Google Voice will send a copy of SMS to your Google email account too
What if I'm not in the US? is there a choice for people abroad?
I use Mighty Txt and AirDroid from Denmark with no difficulties!
I have tryed Google, but are not so happy with this - gives too many problems with not sending the messages :-(mysms! It's available in quite a few languages already
