PopCap Games, developers of Bejeweled, Peggleand Plants vs. Zombies, released Bookworm Heroes today, a mobile multiplayer take on the word game series, according to a press release from the developer.
The free-to-play game pits players against each other, as they take turns building words from letter tiles and draining each other's health. Players can assume the role of Lex the Bookworm and earn coins to purchase or rent literary 'heroes' like Hamlet and 'pets' that add bonuses to boost scores, add health and more. 'We're ecstatic to introduce the next chapter of Bookworm to iOS users in a new adaptation that brings multiplayer and social gameplay to what's previously been a solitary player experience,' said Scott Willoughby, Bookworm franchise director at PopCap. 'Bookworm Heroes adds a new level of fun and challenge among friends, plus a ton of extras that we believe make this the best Bookworm iteration yet.'

SEATTLE, Washington - November 29, 2006 - PopCap Games, the leading developer and publisher of casual games, today announced the launch of Bookworm Adventures, an all-new type of word game that incorporates elements of adventure, role-playing and other game genres to create a truly unique experience that will appeal to all ages and both genders. Bookworm Adventures carries a retail price of $29.95, and a free trial of the deluxe version is available for download at www.popcap.com and other leading game portals, including RealArcade.com, MSN's Game Zone and Yahoo! Games. Under development for more than two years, Bookworm Adventures is PopCap's most elaborate and ambitious title to date.
'Bookworm Adventures is really a new kind of word game, infusing the traditional word-building activity with RPG-style elements and a compelling, humorous storyline that gives the player a great sense of progress and accomplishment,' said Jason Kapalka, Chief Creative Officer of PopCap. 'This may be the first word game ever to be truly character-based, as well as allowing players to customize their special abilities in literally dozens of ways. The feedback we've received from beta testers has been overwhelmingly positive and indicates a high level of 'replayability,' which is always a major goal for us.'
The original Bookworm, introduced in 2002, garnered numerous accolades and has become the best-selling digital word puzzle game of all time, available for Web, PC, Mac, Gameboy, even in-flight on leading airlines. In the new sequel, players fully take on the role of Lex the bookworm - leading him through a series of well-known books and fictional characters which Lex must overcome by forming words from an ever-changing set of letter tiles. From Dracula, the Wolf-man and other famous monsters to legendary Greek, Egyptian and Arabian tales, Lex explores many great works of fiction and takes on scores of enemies, all with their own unique characteristics and powers.
Making longer and more complex words gives Lex greater fighting prowess and generates special letter tiles with special power-up effects of their own. Various potions and treasures provide Lex with added power, defense and dozens of other automatic and one-time abilities to help him defeat the legions of bad guys standing between him and the safety of his beloved Cassandra and the safety of The Great Library. Three 'mini-games' give players additional word puzzles to solve, with their level of success determining the number and strength of extra potions and power-up tiles they'll take with them as they advance from one 'chapter' of the game to the next.
Key features of Bookworm Adventures include:
· Three story books teeming with over 150 uniquely animated enemies
· Three challenging mini-games: Word Master, Letter Rip and Link N' Spell
· Special timed Arena mode for super-speedy spellers
· Beautiful 2D graphics, cut-scenes and special effects
· Stunning sound FX and themed music
· Jokes, dialogue and plot twists aplenty
· A glittering Hall of Fame where top scores, best words and other records are kept,
· A topical Tome of Knowledge containing information on game progress, secrets discovered, attributes of friends and foes and more

Over the years, PopCap Games has created some of the most addictive and well-known casual games on the market. Titles like Bejeweled and Peggle have stolen countless hours of our time due to being just so hard to put down.
Unfortunately, PopCap Games retired many of their games over the years, and since EA acquired the company in 2011, almost every attempt to play an old PopCap Games title redirects you to EA.com where there's little help in finding a valid link where you can play or download the game for free.
If you haven't yet experienced the joy of a PopCap game, there are plenty of ways you can test a few of them out without dropping a dime.

Bejeweled
There are many different versions of this popular match-three puzzle game and just as many ways to play it for free. There are three versions: Classic, Blitz, and Stars.
If you're in the mood for a quick fix of jewel matching action, there's the excellent Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook, which has you playing the game in one-minute spurts. The same game runs on iOS and Android.
With the Bejeweled Stars edition — also available on Facebook, Android, and iOS — you have new ways to match the gems, lifting up gem-filled Clouds into different sections of the board to set off a cascade, moving Glaciers of gems around the board, and Currents that move strings of gems. You can connect and compete with friends, which turns it into a social game.
What We Like
Several iterations of the same game mean there are lots of places to play it
What We Don't Like
You need a mobile device to play the original Bejeweled Classic
Plants vs. Zombies
Zombies are coming and you have only zombie-zapping plants to fight them off. This may be PopCap's most addictive game with hilarious strategy.
The original Plants vs Zombies game is free for iPhone and Android users. There are over 25 zombies to battle in the 50 levels of Adventure mode.
Plants vs. Zombies 2 has over 300 levels, some really challenging. The game is available for free for iPad and iPhone on the iOS App Store, and for Android devices via Google Play.
There's also a free Plants vs. Zombies: Heroes app for iOS and Android where you can collect heroes like Green Shadow, Super Brainz, Grass Knuckles, and Impfinity.
Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2: Deluxe Edition is available for purchase for PCs, Xbox One, and PS4.

What We Like
All three of these games work on mobile devices
What We Don't Like
There isn't a free web-based version
Peggle
Imagine pachinko mixed with an arcade game set in a magical land of unicorns, and you'll have Peggle: an excellent way to spend an afternoon (which may very well turn into an evening). The classic version is comprised of 55 levels featuring themes from the ultra-popular MMO World of Warcraft.
Currently, the only free version of Peggle is Peggle Blast. It's available for iOS and Android devices.
Although the classic Peggle game was retired by PopCap Games in 2017, you can download a free trial of Peggle Deluxe through Pogo. The game is free for one hour after which you can choose to buy it if you like. The classic Peggle game is available from Origin, too, possibly at a cheaper price than Pogo.
Get 60 levels in the night-themed Peggle Nights game. It's also from Pogo, so it's only free during the trial period.
Peggle 2 is the sequel to the original Peggle game, but it's not free to play. You can purchase Peggle 2 for Xbox and PS4.
What We Like
Peggle Blast can be played anywhere with the mobile app
Peggle Deluxe runs in full-screen mode or regular window mode
As you progress through Adventure mode, you can replay specific levels in Quick Play mode
Duel mode lets you play Peggle against the computer or a friend
What We Don't Like
The classic Peggle game is only free during the trial
Solitaire Blitz
Solitaire Blitz is another game PopCap Games retired in 2017, but it's still 100 percent playable if you know where to look.
The easiest way for most people to play Solitaire Blitz is through the Facebook app. If you have Windows 8, you can also play through Pokki, which is a Start menu replacement program; once it's installed, use its built-in app store to download Solitaire Blitz.
The Solitaire Blitz game is a great way to have fun with little time because you can play short solitaire games and collect bits of treasure to solve the mystery of who sank the King's ship. You can see your Facebook friends who also play the game and what their scores are.
What We Don't Like
You have to have a Facebook account to play
No mobile app available to take the game with you
Bookworm
If you like word games, you'll love Bookworm. From the collection of letter tiles, form as many words as you can. Just click and drag your mouse cursor through the tiles to make words from the scrambled letters
As you see the green tiles, use them in your words for more points, and be sure to get rid of the burning tiles before they reach the bottom of the board!
What We Like
No time limit, so it isn't stressful to play
Helps you learn new words
Shows your best and longest words after each round
What We Don't Like
No difficulty level; you have to play through each level every time you play
Tip
If Bookworm doesn't work through the ArcadeThunder link above, try Crazy Games.

From a grid of available letters, players connect letters to form words. As words are formed, they are removed from the grid and the remaining letters collapse to fill the available space. As in Scrabble, players earn more points by creating longer words or words which use less common letters. In November 2006, PopCap Games released a sequel, Bookworm Adventures. Bookworm was released for the Nintendo DS digital distribution service DSiWare on November 30, 2009.[2] It has also been released on the regular Nintendo DS cartridge.[3]
Gameplay
The game requires players to match adjacent letters to form word in the English language. Longer words are worth more points and have a greater chance of producing bonuses.
In addition to standard letters, tiles of various colors can appear depending both on the current level within the game and on the length of words being formed. The tile colors are as follows:
- Red Burning Tiles — Throughout the game, burning red letters appear, increasing in frequency at higher difficulty levels. These letters automatically move downwards, burning through letters below them in the column, until they reach the bottom of the grid, ending the game.
- Green Tiles, Gold Tiles, Sapphire Tiles, and Diamond Tiles- These tiles are awarded to indicate skill in forming longer words. Using these tiles in subsequent words increase the number of points earned by the word. It takes progressively longer for burning tiles to burn through the higher value tiles. Green tiles enter the board from the top, as new regular tiles do, while higher-value bonus titles replace random letters already on the board. Bookworm Free Download.
The game has two modes. «Classic» mode is untimed, while «Action» mode uses randomly appearing burning tiles to create a time-limited game.
If the player clicks on game mascot Lex, found off to the side of the play area, all of the tiles will be scrambled; however, this will produce a rush of red tiles.
Additional points are given for bonus words displayed in the game; additional bonus words formed during a single game produce increasing bonus values. In some versions one can also collect and complete «books» which are groups of words in a similar category. Once one completes the first of any of these words in a particular category it unlocks the book, and displays a complete list of the words needed to complete the book and get bonus points.
